How do I customize text entry fields?

Text entry fields are one of the eight available types of entry fields. This entry field will appear as a blank space for users to input their own text, or as a label that can only be read depending on how it is customized. It is the users choice whether this information will appear in the grid or not.

Procedure

  1. See the How do I make and customize a new form? post or open one of the forms that are there automatically when a module is created.
  2. Select Text on the drop down of the Palette to the left of the form and click on the green + beside the field you wish to add.
  3. Click on the Wrench icon beside the chosen field. Click on the Lock icon beside the chosen field which should turn into a Flag icon.
  4. Go to the Display Name and type the text you want to appear for users.
  5. Check the box for Read Only if you only want the text to appear without making the user able to input text. Check Show in Grid if you want what is entered in the field to appear on the grid. Check Hide in Form if you don't want it to appear in the final version for users to see.
  6. Enter something into the Placeholder Text field if you want something to appear in the space prior to the entry being made. Enter something in the Tooltip field if you want something to appear to give users more detail about a category when they hover over it.
  7. Go to the Validation tab.
  8. If you want the message to be no longer or shorter than a specific number of characters enter the shortest number of characters you want entries to be into the Minimum Length field or the longest number of characters you want entries to be into the Maximum Length field. Messages can be added explaining the differences to form users for either category via the Message field beneath either of the aforementioned tabs or allow the default explanations to explain that the text entered contains too many or too few characters.
  9. If you want to make the field only accept one specific entry, go to Pattern and enter the entry you wish to be accepted. A custom message can be added to give detail about this, or the default message can alert form users that they are using the wrong format. Do this by writing in the Message tab beneath this field.
  10. To make the entry required check the Required checkbox. Either allow the default message to appear, or enter a custom one by filling in the Message field below the Pattern field.
  11. Press the Wrench icon to close the entry field. Press the Preview button to make sure the entry field appears as you wanted.
  12. Press Save at the top of the screen to save the changes you've made.
